About the role

Area Germany is part of Maritime Region West Europe and delivers classification and certification services through approximately 120 employees across eight locations in Germany.

We are looking for a Surveyor for Materials and Products to join our Product Certification team in Essen.

In this role, your primary focus will be the certification and verification of gearboxes, gear systems, power transmission equipment, and other machinery components for marine and offshore applications. You will also support inspections of materials and other components, combining technical assessments, factory inspections, audits, and customer interaction in an international environment.
With structured training, mentoring, and support from experienced colleagues, you will gradually take responsibility for your own projects and customer relationships while developing your technical expertise and qualification as a surveyor.

Main responsibilities

  • Perform certification and verification of materials and components with focus on gearboxes, gear systems, power transmission equipment and other machinery components used in marine and offshore applications.
  • Conduct inspections, audits, and production assessments at manufacturers’ facilities.
  • Review technical documentation, manufacturing processes, material documentation, and test results against applicable certification requirements.
  • Support certification and inspection activities for materials and other components within the wider Product Certification scope.
  • Provide customers with clear technical guidance on certification requirements and agreed next steps.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and technical experts across DNV’s global network.
  • Contribute to business development, digitalisation, innovation, and continuous improvement initiatives.

You will join a highly engaged team where trust, collaboration, and technical excellence are core values.

  • Be part of a global organisation with a strong purpose and a leading position in the maritime industry.
  • Work in an international environment with access to a broad network of technical experts and experienced colleagues.
  • Develop your competence through structured learning, on-the-job training, mentoring, and collaboration across business areas.
  • Gradually take ownership of projects and customer relationships with support from a highly competent team.
  • Work with a wide range of technologies, manufacturers, and engineering disciplines.
  • Contribute to services that help safeguard life, property, and the environment throughout the maritime value chain.
  • Be encouraged to share knowledge, improve how we work, and contribute to the continued development of our services.

Location: Essen and Ruhrgebiet, Germany
Candidates located in Nordrhein-Westfalen will also be considered.

Required qualifications

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Materials Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline.

  • A sound understanding of machinery, materials, manufacturing processes and technical documentation.
  • Good written and spoken communication skills in German and English.
  • A valid driving licence and willingness to travel regularly, primarily within Germany, with occasional international assignments.
