About the role

About the Role

MBO Partners is a 30+ year leader in independent workforce management — compliance, classification, and engagement at scale. As we grow our enterprise and MSP client base, the discipline of solution design becomes a critical link between what we sell and what we deliver.

The Director of Solution Design owns that link. This is not a role that builds custom solutions. It is a role that deeply understands MBO's service portfolio — EOR, AOR Vendor, AOR Business, ITN, Sub-vendor Engagement, and Engagement Support — and applies it with precision to client need. The best outcome is a client who gets exactly what they need from what MBO already does well.

This is a senior individual contributor role. You will work directly with enterprise clients and MSP partners as MBO's subject matter authority on service design and engagement structure, while partnering internally with Sales, Implementation, and Product to ensure consistency and discipline across every deal.

What You Will do

You will be engaged at the deal stage — when an opportunity is shortlisted — to validate that the proposed engagement model is deliverable as scoped and that pricing is achievable within MBO's standard framework. You are the internal check on scope discipline: if a deal requires something outside MBO's capabilities, you say so clearly and early.

In client-facing settings, you will participate in enterprise presentations, solution reviews, and finalist meetings alongside the Account Executive. Your role in those conversations is to give clients confidence that MBO understands their workforce problem and has a proven service model to solve it — without over-engineering or over-promising. You translate client complexity into MBO service constructs, and you do it in the room.

You will build and maintain the frameworks, playbooks, and decision tools that help AEs structure engagements correctly from the first conversation. You will train sellers on how to match client workforce challenges to MBO's capabilities, and you will work with Product to ensure that what we offer stays current with what enterprise clients actually need.

You will also serve as a feedback loop. When clients ask for things we cannot do, or when deals require repeated exceptions, you will surface those patterns to Product leadership as a signal for capability investment.

What We Are Looking For

You have deep familiarity with the contingent workforce industry — IC compliance, misclassification risk, staffing supplier dynamics, and MSP program structures. You understand why a client might need EOR versus AOR, when ITN is the right sourcing answer, and what Sub-vendor Engagement actually solves. You do not need to be taught the business.

You are commercially minded. You understand that deal economics matter, that pricing exceptions have downstream consequences, and that a well-scoped deal is easier to implement and easier to renew than one that was stretched to close.

You have the discipline to hold the line. When a client request falls outside MBO's service model, you are comfortable saying so — and you are skilled at redirecting toward what MBO can do rather than leaving a gap. You do not over-promise to win business.

You are effective in front of clients. You can hold your own in a room with a procurement leader, an MSP program director, or a Chief Legal Officer. You communicate with authority, simplify complex service models without losing accuracy, and build trust quickly.

You are a strong cross-functional partner. Sales will look to you for structure and credibility. Implementation will look to you for scoping clarity. Product will look to you for market signal. You communicate well across all three without needing a team behind you.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years in contingent workforce, workforce solutions, or a related services environment
  • Experience in a pre-sales, solution architecture, or client engagement role with direct accountability for deal structure
  • Demonstrated comfort presenting to senior client stakeholders — procurement, legal, HR, and program leadership
  • Working knowledge of IC classification frameworks (IRS Common Law, DOL Economic Reality Test, state ABC tests)
  • Familiarity with MSP/VMS program structures and how third-party providers operate within them
  • Strong written and verbal communication; able to simplify complex service models for both internal and client audiences
  • Comfortable operating as a solo practitioner — building the function while doing the work

What Success Looks Like

In the first six months, you have mapped MBO's full service portfolio into a clear decision framework that AEs can use to structure deals and validate them before they reach the deal team. You are showing up in finalist meetings and adding credibility. Deals that reach implementation are scoped correctly. Exceptions are fewer and better documented. Product has a cleaner view of where capability gaps exist.

In the first year, solution design is a recognized function that sales trusts and implementation relies on. You have a consistent voice, consistent standards, and a reputation for being rigorous without being a bottleneck. Clients know who you are.
