Laborer - Asphalt Luteman NORTH

AMERICAN ENGINEERING is seeking an Asphalt Rake/Luteman position.

Job Title: Asphalt Rake/Luteman
Department: Construction Operations
Reports To: Foreman / Crew Supervisor

Position Summary

The Asphalt Rake/Luteman is responsible for assisting in the placement, leveling, and finishing of hot mix asphalt on roadways, parking lots, and other paving projects. This position works closely with paving crews to ensure proper asphalt grade, smoothness, and overall quality while maintaining a safe work environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Perform asphalt raking, luting, and hand finishing operations behind paving equipment.
• Distribute and level hot asphalt using lutes, rakes, shovels, and other hand tools.
• Establish and maintain proper grade, slope, and drainage requirements.
• Remove excess material and correct imperfections to achieve a smooth finish.
• Assist screed operators and paving crews during asphalt placement.
• Compact edges and prepare surfaces for rolling operations.
• Clean joints and apply tack coat as directed.
• Assist with traffic control setup and maintenance of safe work zones.
• Conduct daily inspection and cleaning of tools and equipment.
• Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and project requirements.
• Perform general labor duties as assigned to support paving operations.

Qualifications

• Previous asphalt paving experience preferred.
• Ability to use asphalt rakes, lutes, shovels, and hand tools effectively.
• Knowledge of paving procedures, grades, and asphalt placement techniques.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced outdoor construction environment.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
• Reliable transportation and regular attendance.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat.
• Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the workday.
• Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and travel as project demands require.

Work Environment

• Outdoor construction and roadway work zones.
• Exposure to hot asphalt, dust, noise, vibrations, and heavy equipment traffic.
• Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety vest, gloves, safety glasses, and work boots.

This position plays a critical role in producing high-quality asphalt surfaces while maintaining productivity, safety, and workmanship standards.
