Description
Process Engineer
Lewiston, ME | $85,000–$112,000/year | Full-Time | Benefits Starting Day One
Improve the Processes That Power Advanced Manufacturing
Great manufacturing doesn’t happen by accident. It takes the right equipment, reliable processes, technical expertise, and people who know how to solve problems when things don’t go as planned. Elmet Technologies is looking for a Process Engineer to join our manufacturing team in Lewiston, Maine.
In this role, you’ll take technical ownership of manufacturing equipment and processes, working directly with production teams to improve quality, reliability, efficiency, and manufacturing performance. You’ll troubleshoot equipment, develop and improve processes, support new product development, and help identify the equipment and capabilities needed to support future growth.
This is a hands-on engineering position for someone who enjoys being on the manufacturing floor, solving complex technical problems, and seeing the results of their work in everyday production. Reporting to the Process Engineering Manager, you’ll work closely with Production, Maintenance, Engineering, Supply Chain, and other teams to make our manufacturing operations safer, more capable, and more efficient.
What’s In It for You
- Benefits starting Day One, including medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) with company match
- Paid time off and paid holidays
- Tuition assistance
- Professional development and internal growth opportunities
- Opportunity to take technical ownership of manufacturing processes and equipment
- Hands-on involvement in equipment improvements, troubleshooting, and new product development
- Direct influence on manufacturing quality, reliability, productivity, and cost
- Opportunity to work with advanced materials and specialized manufacturing equipment
- Collaboration with experienced engineering, production, and maintenance teams
What You’ll Do
As a Process Engineer, you’ll be responsible for the performance, reliability, and continuous improvement of assigned manufacturing processes and equipment. Your responsibilities will include:
- Serve as the technical owner of assigned manufacturing equipment and processes
- Develop, maintain, and improve process specifications, work instructions, equipment controls, and monitoring procedures
- Monitor, track, and audit manufacturing results to ensure products meet required material properties, quality standards, and manufacturability requirements
- Partner with development engineers to establish reliable manufacturing processes for new products, materials, and alloys
- Work with Production Planning and manufacturing leadership to optimize equipment scheduling, utilization, and capacity
- Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing quality, productivity, reliability, and cost
- Evaluate manufacturing processes, tooling, equipment, materials, and product designs to develop practical improvements
- Plan and manage the installation and integration of manufacturing equipment and processes
- Support strategic planning and capital investment decisions to expand manufacturing capabilities and capacity
- Apply Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methods to reduce waste, improve reliability, and increase process efficiency
- Use analytical and mathematical problem-solving methods to identify root causes of equipment, process, and product failures
- Recommend changes to equipment, tooling, product designs, tolerances, or processing methods to resolve manufacturing problems
- Work directly with Maintenance technicians to troubleshoot equipment issues and implement lasting solutions
- Provide hands-on technical support to operators and technicians on the manufacturing floor
- Develop clear, detailed manufacturing work instructions and process documentation
- Identify and address manufacturing safety concerns, including equipment and ergonomic risks
- Collaborate with Supply Chain, Finance, and Production to evaluate material rework, repair, or replacement decisions
- Prepare manufacturing proposals and cost estimates for new products, including tooling and resource requirements
- Lead technical and process improvement projects, ensuring successful and timely implementation
Requirements
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for an engineer who combines strong technical knowledge with a practical understanding of manufacturing. You’ll need:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience
- Experience working in a manufacturing environment
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to diagnose manufacturing and equipment issues using a hands-on, data-driven approach
- Strong planning, organization, and time management skills
- Project management skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with employees at all levels
- Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement
- A results-oriented approach and willingness to take ownership of technical challenges
Experience with Lean Manufacturing principles and practices is preferred.
Technical Experience That Can Help You Succeed
Our Lewiston manufacturing operations involve specialized materials and processes. Experience with any of the following would be particularly valuable:
- High-temperature sintering and annealing furnaces
- Hot and cold metal rolling, including rolling materials to foil thickness
- Rod swaging
- Wire drawing to very small diameters
- Manufacturing equipment troubleshooting and process optimization
- Equipment installation, integration, and process development
- Advanced materials processing and metalworking operations
You don’t need experience with every process listed above. We’re looking for someone with strong engineering fundamentals, relevant manufacturing experience, and the ability to learn and improve specialized processes.
How You’ll Make an Impact
Success in this role means making manufacturing processes safer, more reliable, more capable, and more efficient.
You’ll make an impact by:
- Improving manufacturing quality, consistency, and process capability
- Reducing equipment downtime and recurring process problems
- Improving equipment utilization and manufacturing throughput
- Identifying and eliminating root causes of defects and production failures
- Reducing manufacturing costs through better processes, tooling, and equipment performance
- Helping new products, materials, and alloys transition successfully into production
- Developing clear process documentation that supports consistent manufacturing results
- Supporting equipment and capital improvements that expand manufacturing capabilities
- Building strong working relationships with operators, technicians, and other engineering teams
- Delivering measurable improvements in safety, reliability, quality, and productivity
A Hands-On Manufacturing Environment
This isn’t an engineering position where you’ll spend all day behind a desk. You’ll spend meaningful time on the manufacturing floor, working directly with equipment, processes, operators, and maintenance technicians. One day might involve troubleshooting a furnace or production issue. Another could involve improving process controls, developing work instructions, evaluating manufacturing data, supporting equipment installation, or working with development engineers on a new material.
You’ll need to be comfortable moving between technical analysis, project work, and hands-on manufacturing support. The position includes both office and manufacturing-floor activities.
