The editor will be expected to generate a wide range of ideas for arguments, columns, and regular features; edit and top-edit the articles that make up the front of the book and ensure that the section has depth, integrity, variety, wit, and style. This editor should have a deep love of magazines and a capacious sense of what makes them most dynamic and compelling. Impeccable editorial judgment and devotion to the craft of writing are musts.

Qualifications:

  • Significant experience assigning and editing articles across disciplines and in a range of styles, including opinion, reporting, humor, and argued essays

  • Large and varied network of writers, scholars, and other potential contributors
  • A record of publishing writers of diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to guide writers and fellow editors to do their best work
  • A knack for display copy and other elements of magazine packaging and web publishing

Key responsibilities:

  • Assigning and editing stories for Dispatches
  • Working closely with both staff writers and freelancers; expanding our network of contributors
  • Helping to ensure that our coverage is compelling, thoughtful, original, and maximally ambitious
  • Shepherding pieces through copyedit and fact-checking; working with teams across the newsroom to enhance the presentation and distribution of stories

Salary minimum: $105,000; Salary maximum: $175,000

This position is based in New York City or Washington, D.C.

This is a Guild position.
