About the role
SOSS Full-Time Faculty, Assistant Professor in Public Policy and/or Public Governance (Term or Tenure-track)
Established in 2007, the SMU School of Social Sciences (SOSS) provides high quality undergraduate and graduate education expanding SMU's pedagogical strategy to the study of society, government, and individuals embedded within an increasingly complex world. With faculty expertise and research spanning the disciplines of psychology, political science, sociology, and philosophy, SOSS's research covers key thematic areas such as international development, public policy and politics, Southeast Asian studies, social movements, and sustainability. The School aspires to make a significant and lasting contribution across sectors through its integrative approach to the study of social issues.
Public policy and public governance form a strategic growth area for SOSS. At the undergraduate level, Public Policy and Public Management (PPPM) is offered as a minor to any SMU student, through the School. At the post-graduate level, the School is launching a new postgraduate programme, the Master of Public Governance and Leadership (MPGL), that is designed for early- to mid-career policy professionals across the public, private, non-profit, and multilateral sectors, and offers specialised tracks in digital transformation and sustainability governance alongside a core curriculum in governance and leadership.
Singapore Management University is a research university committed to an integrated curriculum, providing opportunities to work with faculty across the social sciences. The research support is generally excellent and salary and benefits are highly competitive. The teaching load for tenure track positions is comparable to other research universities, and typically, junior faculty receive a 2-course per year teaching load for their first contract. The teaching load is higher for education track faculty.
The Position:
The School of Social Sciences (SOSS) invites applications for a term or tenure-track position in Public Policy and/or Public Governance, at the level of Assistant Professor, to begin in July 2027. Public Policy is a distinct thematic area within the Political Science discipline within SOSS. The School is particularly interested in candidates whose research scholarship and teaching experience relate to topics within the policy sciences, policy analysis, public administration or global governance. Within these areas, we are open to research focus, although an interest in Asia would be a plus, and the successful tenure-track candidate will display a record of, or high potential for scholarly research. The ideal candidate will also have a record of demonstrated teaching aptitude in topics linked to introductory public policy, policy analysis and design, or special topic electives that can contribute towards the School's undergraduate Public Policy and Public Management minor or Political Science major. The successful education track faculty may also be asked to teach for the postgraduate Master of Public Governance and Leadership (MPGL) program.
Experience:
Applicants must have:
A PhD in Public Policy, Political Science, Public Administration, Public Management, or a closely related field.
A record of scholarly contribution to the fields of public policy or public governance, appropriate to the track and rank. For education track candidates, this should include some experience in teaching, curriculum development, and pedagogical or applied scholarship.
A strong and demonstrable record of teaching effectiveness at the undergraduate level in the area of public policy. Preparedness to teach in the MPGL. Any postgraduate teaching in the above topics is a plus for education-track applicants but not required for tenure track applicants.
Good complementarity with the existing strengths and research focus of the School of Social Sciences.
Evidence of academic citizenship and service
Application:
The application package must be submitted by 15 November 2026 electronically via the Careers@SMU portal:
1. A cover letter describing research, teaching philosophy and experience explicitly related to public policy and governance.
2. Detailed research and teaching statements.
3. An up-to-date CV (including teaching experience and a list of three referees).
4. Up to three samples of professional output — these may include academic publications, policy reports, applied research, teaching materials, or other relevant work.
5. Evidence of teaching effectiveness (such as teaching evaluations and a sample syllabus).
Only shortlisted candidates will be notified for interviews. Interviews will begin in January 2027. The expected appointment start date is July 2027 or soon thereafter. All hires are contingent upon the successful completion of appropriate verification checks.
Applicants are only required to submit the contact information of their three referees. Referees will be contacted for recommendation letters if the applicant is shortlisted.
